Chris Hughes, who gained popularity from his time on Love Island, has reportedly been removed from his role as a presenter for the BBC’s cricket event, The Hundred. This follows a significant reshuffle in the network’s presenting line-up. Hughes has been involved with The Hundred since its inception in 2021, but he will not be returning for the upcoming season.

The competition kicks off on Tuesday with a match between London Spirit and Oval Invincibles at Lord’s. Both the BBC and Sky Sports broadcast the tournament, but it appears that organisers are keen to shift the focus back to the sporting action rather than celebrity-driven promotions.

According to a BBC representative, “Chris has done a good job for four years, but we’re going in a different direction. There will be more focus on the cricket this year, rather than promoting the Hundred as an entertainment show.” Former England cricketers Alex Hartley and Isa Guha are set to lead the new presenting team, bringing their extensive knowledge of the sport. Rick Edwards from Radio Five Live will step into Hughes’s role.

This marks the second recent loss in sports presenting for Hughes, who parted ways with ITV Racing in April after a six-year tenure, reportedly due to contract payment disputes.

Hughes’s tenure as a cricket presenter faced its challenges, including a reprimand from the BBC in 2023. He received criticism for remarks made during a live segment where he compared an on-air female cricketer, Mailan Brown, to a “little Barbie.” This comment was made during a discussion on team bonding activities related to the Barbie movie. In response to Brown’s comment about the film, Hughes remarked, “You’re a little Barbie yourself, aren’t you, with your blue eyes,” to which Brown laughed, but the remark drew backlash online. A BBC spokesman stated, “We have spoken to Chris and explained that his comment was not appropriate,” though Hughes returned to the network afterward.

Initially, Hughes became a household name on Love Island, experiencing a brief romance with Olivia Attwood, but their relationship did not endure. He has since engaged in multiple reality shows, including Celebrity Big Brother, where he developed a relationship with JoJo Siwa after they connected during the competition. What started as a friendship on-screen evolved into a romantic relationship once the cameras stopped rolling.
