The FIA has expressed its sorrow following three fatalities in motorsport events across the UK and Denmark on Saturday. In a statement, the governing body noted, “The FIA is saddened to learn of the tragic incidents at the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland, Vintage Motorsport Festival at Donington Park and Nykøbing Falster Motor Sport’s Anniversary Rally in Denmark.”
In Scotland, Dai Roberts tragically lost his life during the Jim Clark Rally. The 39-year-old was serving as a navigator for driver James Williams in this significant round of the British Rally Championship when the incident occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Julian Grimwade passed away during the Vintage Motorsport Festival in Leicestershire. A police statement confirmed they were alerted to a collision involving a single vehicle at Donington Park on Saturday, with the driver, a man in his 70s, later succumbing to his injuries in hospital. The coroner’s office is handling the identification of the deceased, and investigations are ongoing.
Motorsport UK acknowledged Grimwade’s passing, stating, “It is with great sadness that Motorsport UK confirms the passing of Julian Grimwade, who was competing at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s race event at Donington Park today.” The organisation extended its deepest sympathies to Grimwade’s family, friends, and the Vintage Sports Car Club community.
In addition, Donington Park shared its condolences, saying, “Our thoughts go to the family and friends of the driver, as well as those in the VSCC community.”
Reports emerged from Denmark indicating that a spectator was killed after being struck by a vehicle at the 75th anniversary rally of Nykøbing Falster Motor Sport, marking another tragic incident on a day of mourning for motorsport enthusiasts.
