Full Story
In the coming weeks, a contingent of critically ill and injured Palestinian children, numbering between 30 and 50, is set to be brought from Gaza to the UK for essential medical care. This marks the first organized effort by the UK government, in collaboration with the Foreign Office, Home Office, and Department of Health, to evacuate children for treatment during the ongoing conflict.
The selection of the children will be undertaken by the World Health Organization (WHO), and the children will travel with family members via a third country, where biometric data will be collected as part of the pre-evacuation process. This development follows a letter addressed to the government by a cross-party coalition of 96 MPs, urging for the immediate evacuation of sick and injured children from Gaza in light of the rapidly deteriorating healthcare situation, which they described as life-threatening.
Previously, a number of Gazan children have been admitted to the UK for medical attention through a private initiative called Project Pure Hope (PPH), yet the government’s formal actions in this regard had not materialized until now. Earlier reports indicated that the UK government was making swift progress in establishing plans for a formal evacuation of children requiring urgent medical assistance.
Details surrounding the exact number of children involved, the specific third country to be used for transit, and whether additional groups will follow remain unclear. There are concerns regarding the future of these children, as some may enter the asylum system after their treatment concludes due to challenges in returning them to Gaza.
The UN charity UNICEF has reported that over 50,000 children have suffered fatal or life-altering injuries since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza in October 2023. In response to the humanitarian crisis, the UK has allocated funds for the treatment of injured Gazans in local hospitals and is also coordinating with Jordan for aid deliveries to the region.
Once in the UK, the children will receive treatment through the National Health Service (NHS). In early August, the UK government confirmed that a cross-party taskforce was actively developing plans to ensure the safe evacuation of children needing urgent medical care.
The Home Office had previously stated that biometric checks would be conducted for both the children and accompanying caregivers prior to travel. Since the onset of the conflict, severely ill Palestinians, including both adults and children, have been evacuated to various countries, with over 180 individuals reported to have been sent to Italy.
The UN has issued warnings regarding severe malnutrition in Gaza, with experts predicting a potential famine scenario. Meanwhile, Israel has asserted that there are no limitations on the delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza, countering claims that assistance has not been adequately provided. The health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, has reported that the death toll has surpassed 60,000 since the start of Israel’s military operations, which were initiated in response to a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals.
