Two well-known figures from reality television have surprised their followers by announcing their engagement, a mere two months after welcoming their newest child amid allegations of infidelity. The couple first gained attention on MTV’s “Ex On The Beach” in 2016, where they were reunited.
In a heartfelt post shared with her 700,000 Instagram followers, Helen Briggs disclosed her engagement to long-time partner Chet Johnson. She wrote, “Today is our 10 year anniversary… & the beginning of something even more beautiful. In a couple of weeks we are saying ‘I do’. We can’t wait for this next chapter.” Accompanying the announcement was a joyful video where both appeared elated regarding their forthcoming nuptials. Chet recounted the unique way Helen proposed, describing it as unexpected: “I was at the gym, and I get this phone call and she’s like ‘do you want to get married?’ and I’m like ‘what do you mean do you want to get married?’”
Helen, aged 29, explained her long-held belief about marriage, stating, “If anyone knows me, I always said 10 years and I’ll decide if I want to get married or not.” Notably, she also revealed that the day before giving birth to their youngest child, Honey, she contacted the registry office to arrange their wedding.
The couple has opted for a modest celebration, planning to marry in a small ceremony with close family and friends within ten weeks, complete with a roast dinner and a larger celebration later that evening. Fans have offered an outpouring of support, with comments expressing joy and admiration for their approach to marriage.
Rejecting the idea of spending £60,000 on an extravagant wedding, they emphasized the importance of keeping it authentic to their relationship. Helen admitted that her perspective on marriage changed, particularly regarding the practicality of shared surnames for their children.
Looking ahead, they hinted at a more lavish celebration in the future, stating they wish to involve their children when they are old enough. “We want all our kids to be there, so I feel like this won’t be the end wedding. In ten years we’re probably going to do it again,” Chet shared. Helen echoed this sentiment, expressing that she wishes for all her children to be involved in such a significant event.
The couple has navigated a challenging path, welcoming their first child, Ocean, in November 2019 following a lengthy labor. They later welcomed their son, Elvis, in December 2020, followed by daughter Peach in December 2022. Their youngest, Honey, arrived on June 4 via C-section, just a day before her expected due date.
However, the relationship faced turmoil in July 2023 when Helen announced their split and accused Chet of cheating. This announcement came after years of speculation surrounding infidelity during their relationship. In a detailed statement, Helen cited “endless” allegations and claimed to have seen “evidence” of Chet’s supposed unfaithfulness.
Despite the tumultuous chapter, the couple reconciled later that year. Helen revealed in an Instagram Q&A, “Chet and I are back together. We went through hell and back this summer over an allegation which didn’t turn out to be true. I jumped the gun and put out a statement without even reading between the lines.” Chet had consistently denied the allegations and ultimately vindicated himself as the truth emerged.
