Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones returned to their presenting duties on Monday, marking the revival of Morning Live following its summer break. Their reunion comes as Gethin copes with the recent passing of his father.
The duo was seen cheerfully preparing for the show, although they were not photographed together. Helen, aged 42, sported a long brown buttoned dress, while 47-year-old Gethin opted for a casual look with black trousers and a light blue t-shirt, complemented by a rucksack as they grabbed coffees ahead of the broadcast.
On BBC Breakfast, presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent welcomed the return of Morning Live, with Jon playfully stating, “We have a true sign now that summer is over. Morning Live is back!” Gethin responded warmly, remarking, “It’s good to see you.” The pair had previously bid farewell to their audience in July when they disclosed they would be “taking a break for a few weeks” during the summertime.
In the lead-up to their return, both hosts teased their audience on social media, generating excitement among viewers. One fan expressed their enthusiasm, writing, “Yay!! Record it every day to watch when home from work, such a valuable show with lots of great tips on everything, health, money, fitness, cooking, travel what’s not to love. Welcome back I’ve missed you all.”
The comeback occurs amidst reports of a cooling in their romantic connection, as well as just three weeks after Gethin disclosed the death of his father, who passed away after a prolonged illness. In a poignant social media tribute, Gethin shared a photograph of himself smiling with his father at the hospital, alongside a heartfelt eulogy that included a Max Boyce quote: “Wales defeated England. Hymns and Arias with dad last night, before he left us this morning.”
He reflected on his father’s final moments, describing them as a “perfect, peaceful end,” enhanced by Welsh hymns and loving farewells from his grandsons via phone. Gethin expressed the impact his father’s enduring presence had on the local community, noting, “Every day I’ve been at the Heath Hospital in Cardiff, someone would stop me and ask me about dad. He probably taught them at some point.” He described his father as a dedicated educator, serving 40 years in total, including 28 as a headteacher.
In his heartfelt message, Gethin also expressed gratitude to the NHS staff, referring to them as “amazing” for their care during his father’s illness.
Morning Live airs at 9.30am on BBC One and is also available on BBC iPlayer, following the early morning broadcast of BBC Breakfast at 6am.
