The upcoming 2025 US Open is poised to make a significant impact with the introduction of a new mixed doubles event, featuring prominent players. Tournament organizers aim to elevate the profile of mixed doubles, setting the stage for an exciting start to the competition.
Among the star pairings confirmed for the event are former US Open champions Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, who will compete from August 19 to 20. Tennis enthusiasts can catch live coverage of the tournament on Sky Sports, which will also broadcast the singles tournaments from August 24 to September 7.
The mixed doubles event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, and Wednesday, August 20, directly before the singles competitions commence on August 24. This new schedule is designed to attract top singles players to participate, thereby enhancing the mixed doubles event’s visibility. The competition will kick off on August 19 at 4 PM UK time and will conclude with a night session on August 20, starting at midnight UK time on August 21. Matches will take place at both Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, with the final day held solely at Arthur Ashe.
The tournament will showcase 16 teams, comprising the top eight based on combined singles rankings and eight wild card entries. Notable participants include British No. 1 Jack Draper, who has teamed up again with Jessica Pegula, and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who will partner with ten-time Grand Slam doubles champion Katerina Siniakova. Both Raducanu and Alcaraz are among the wild card pairings, alongside 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, as well as 45-year-old Venus Williams partnering with Reilly Opelka. The defending champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, will also compete as wild cards.
The mixed doubles tournament features an innovative format, with matches consisting of best-of-three sets, using short sets up to four games. If teams reach four games apiece, a tiebreak will determine the winner of the set. In cases where both teams claim a set, a 10-point match tiebreak will take place instead of a third set. The finals will maintain this structure but will allow sets to cap at six games, with identical tiebreak rules applying.
Prize money for the event is substantial, with the winners set to receive $1,000,000, while the runners-up will earn $400,000. Those reaching the semi-finals will be awarded $200,000, and quarter-finalists $100,000, with participants in the Round of 16 receiving $20,000.
