Amcor Plc, a global leader in packaging solutions, has announced a new collaboration with UK-based startup Kelpi to explore innovative coating technologies that could revolutionize fiber-based packaging. This partnership focuses on testing a unique seaweed-derived coating technology, which Amcor aims to apply within its AmFiber product line.
The primary objective of this initiative is to evaluate the seaweed-based coating’s capabilities in enhancing moisture and gas barrier performance, as well as its suitability for recycling with paper materials. Amcor is committed to identifying sustainable alternatives that reduce reliance on fossil fuel-derived inputs while adhering to established packaging standards.
Kelpi’s coating, which is formulated from seaweed biomass, has shown promise in initial assessments, indicating its compatibility with existing production equipment while fulfilling necessary barrier performance criteria.
“This collaboration reflects how we are advancing our material innovation pipeline, and it supports the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s call for accelerated innovation in paper-based flexible packaging,” stated Peter Ettridge, Director of Research and Development for AmFiber at Amcor.
Following the announcement, Amcor’s shares saw a slight increase of 0.21 percent, reaching $43.03 during overnight trading on the NYSE, having concluded the previous day’s trading with a modest decline.
This partnership underscores Amcor’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in the packaging sector, aligning with broader industry trends towards eco-friendly alternatives and improvements in packaging technology.
