Full Story

Amcor Plc, a prominent packaging firm, has forged a partnership with UK-based startup Kelpi to investigate innovative coating technologies. This collaboration, announced late on Monday, will focus on testing a coating derived from seaweed for use in fiber-based packaging materials.

The company’s aim is to evaluate the seaweed-based coating within its AmFiber product range, specifically looking at its effectiveness in providing moisture and gas barriers, as well as its compatibility with paper recycling processes. Amcor is prioritizing the development of materials that diminish reliance on fossil fuel inputs while adhering to established packaging standards.

Kelpi’s innovative coating is formulated from seaweed biomass, and Amcor has indicated that initial evaluations demonstrate its potential to operate on current equipment while fulfilling necessary barrier specifications. “This collaboration reflects how we are advancing our material innovation pipeline, and it supports the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s call for accelerated innovation in paper-based flexible packaging,” commented Peter Ettridge, Director of Research and Development for AmFiber at Amcor.

In response to this announcement, Amcor’s stock experienced a modest increase of 0.21%, reaching $43.03 during overnight trading on the New York Stock Exchange, following a slight decline earlier in the day.
