UK households grappling with insufficient Wi-Fi performance may soon see a solution as EE, a subsidiary of BT, prepares to introduce a new high-speed router. Images of this anticipated device have emerged, showcasing its eco-friendly design, which incorporates recycled plastics, alongside the advanced Wi-Fi 7 technology.
Wi-Fi 7 represents a significant upgrade over earlier generations such as Wi-Fi 4, 5, and 6, which many residents are currently using. This next-generation technology is engineered to handle improved speed, reduced latency, and a higher number of simultaneous connections. Such capabilities are increasingly essential for modern households, which often boast multiple laptops, smart TVs, and a variety of connected devices, necessitating robust and reliable internet service.
The new routers are expected to address the future demands for high-bandwidth activities, including 4K streaming and large file downloads for gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5. While EE already provides a premium Wi-Fi 7 Smart WiFi Pro router, priced from £60.99 monthly and capable of speeds up to 1.6 Gbps, it is anticipated that the upcoming model will be available at a more accessible tier with speeds of 500Mbps and 900Mbps, starting from £35.99 per month.
Currently, new customers opting for these bundles receive a standard router, lacking the capability of Wi-Fi 7, but this is expected to change later this year, pending an official announcement from EE regarding the release date of this new product.
This development follows Sky’s recent introduction of its own Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ packages, which promise speeds of up to 5 Gbps and include their own Wi-Fi 7 routers. To put this in perspective, subscribers with a 5 Gbps connection could download a full HD movie in under 10 seconds, a speed that is over 50 times greater than the UK’s average internet speed.
