Full Story
A significant network provider, O2, is set to discontinue its 3G services, impacting millions of users. Clients will lose internet access on the go unless they upgrade their devices. This marks O2 as the final major network to phase out its 3G technology, following similar actions by EE, Vodafone, and Three under a government agreement from 2021.
The shutdown of the 3G network has already occurred in regions such as Durham, Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, with Torquay now being the latest area to be affected. The closure will also influence various mobile companies that depend on O2’s infrastructure, including Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile.
While the majority of customers will experience little disruption—anticipating enhanced capacity for 4G and 5G services—some users with older smartphones may find they lack compatibility with these modern networks. These customers will still retain the ability to make calls and send texts, but will lose mobile data access.
Currently, Virgin Media O2 indicates that its 3G network now manages less than 2% of overall data traffic. The company has been proactive, reaching out to users without compatible handsets to offer assistance. This includes providing free upgrades to vulnerable customers and discounts on new devices for others.
Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, emphasized the importance of supporting older individuals during this transition, stating, “The 3G switch-off may feel daunting for many older people so it’s important that we do all we can to support those affected.” She added, “We’re very grateful for this funding from Virgin Media O2 as this will enhance our services, including our Advice Line, so that older customers can get the help needed when 3G is switched off.”
For those concerned about the implications of the switch-off, it’s critical to communicate with their mobile providers for clarification on their options. Age UK also offers a dedicated Advice Line at 0800 169 65 65 for further assistance.
The following mobile networks are affected by the O2 3G termination: O2, Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile, and GiffGaff. Other networks, including Vodafone, Asda Mobile, and EE, have already ceased their 3G operations.
Most smartphones purchased in the last decade should not be affected by this change. However, users can verify their device’s compatibility by navigating to the settings and checking under Network Mode or Preferred Network. If 4G or 5G options are displayed, they are likely unaffected by the 3G shutdown.
An analysis by Jamie Harris from The Sun points out that the precise number of individuals impacted by this switch-off remains uncertain. Though previous transitions by Three, EE, and Vodafone went largely unnoticed, it is essential to consider those who may still rely on 3G-only phones, especially if they possess limited tech skills. Individuals in need of support are encouraged to reach out to O2, GiffGaff, Tesco Mobile, or Age UK for guidance.
