What happened

Three children aged five, eight and 11 and a teacher have been killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The attacker, a 16-year-old boy who lived in the city, was shot dead inside the building by a member of the public.

A seven-year-old child and a second teacher, aged 54, were taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. Police gave details of the casualties at a news conference on Thursday evening, several hours after the attack interrupted the school afternoon.

The first confrontation took place outside. A man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pick-up in the school car park saw a teenager approaching with a long gun and challenged him. The teenager fired repeatedly towards the man and his vehicle, shattering a rear window and leaving six bullet holes.

The teenager then threw the weapon over a fence and climbed across. The driver contacted Deschutes County emergency dispatchers at about 12.59pm. Within a minute, Bend police had issued an alert directing officers to respond to a critical incident at the school.

The attacker gained entry by firing at locked doors. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said emergency operators subsequently received dozens of 911 calls as people reported that the gunman was inside the building and continuing to shoot. Police reached the school at 1.02pm.

Authorities said a community member followed the teenager into the building and shot him dead there. Oregon governor Tina Kotek later praised that intervention. The person who killed the attacker has not been publicly named.

The weapon used was a pump-action shotgun. At the evening briefing, police described the initial emergency call about someone carrying a long gun and shooting at a vehicle, but did not identify the firearm's make.

The school went into lockdown, and officers searched classrooms and other rooms before evacuating those inside. The youngest pupils were brought out first. Outside, armed officers wearing protective vests checked parked vehicles as the emergency operation continued around the grounds.

Police asked people to stay away from the area, while worried parents gathered near the school. Children were subsequently transported by bus to nearby Journey Church, which became the designated place for families to collect them away from the shooting scene.

The background

Silver Rail serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade, the early years of American schooling. Officials put its enrolment at about 450 pupils, with around 40 staff. Thursday's attack began roughly an hour before lessons were due to finish for the day.

Bend is a city of about 100,000 people on the Deschutes River, approximately 170 miles south-east of Portland. The school forms part of Bend-La Pine Schools, a district whose responsibilities extend beyond the immediate neighbourhood affected by the killings.

For some families, Thursday had begun with preparations for school photographs. Steven and Angela Nuchols had dressed their eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte, for picture day that morning before news of the shooting sent them rushing towards the school.

The attack comes amid repeated incidents involving firearms at American schools. The gun-safety organisation Everytown for Gun Safety has recorded at least 100 incidents of gunfire on school grounds across the United States during 2026, with 33 deaths. That measure covers gunfire on school property, rather than only attacks of this kind.

Oregon has introduced several firearm safety measures in recent years. They include legislation requiring a criminal background check and safety training before approval for a firearm permit. Those requirements concern access to weapons; the investigation into Thursday's attack is examining the circumstances of this particular gunman and shooting.

What people are saying

Mayor Melanie Kebler described the killings as a devastating loss for Bend and expressed sympathy for children, families, educators and other school employees. She stressed that schools should provide security as well as education, and urged residents to support one another through their grief.

Steven Cook, superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools, encouraged parents to keep their children close and allow them to express distress. His message emphasised listening, giving children space to talk or cry, and recognising the community's need to mourn before expecting it to recover.

Kotek characterised the bystander's intervention as heroic while also acknowledging its emotional weight. Her response recognised that the person who stopped the attacker would have to live with the experience, alongside the wider trauma facing pupils, staff and families.

Mindy Corley, whose nephew attends fifth grade at Silver Rail, described his fear as he waited to leave. He had a mobile phone and was able to tell his mother that he was safe, but wanted to go home.

At the church, parents embraced their children, kissed them and held their hands on the way back to their cars. Some had brought favourite soft toys and other comforting belongings from home. Later, people gathered for a candlelight vigil to mourn those killed.

Gabrielle Giffords, the former congresswoman who survived a mass shooting in 2011 and now campaigns for gun controls, expressed grief and called for action by political leaders at every level. Her response placed the Oregon killings within the wider debate over preventing firearm violence in the United States.

What happens next

All 32 schools in the Bend-La Pine district cancelled Friday classes. The closure also covered sport and extracurricular activities, extending the immediate disruption beyond Silver Rail to families across the district and to commitments outside the normal classroom timetable.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities, its director Kash Patel said. That brings federal support to the inquiry being conducted following the local police response, as investigators work to reconstruct the attack from its beginning outside the school to its conclusion inside.

Investigators are examining whether the teenager had any connection to Silver Rail, including whether he had previously attended it or knew anyone there. Police had not publicly identified him by Thursday evening, and his motive remained under investigation.

Why this matters

For families in the UK, the ages of those killed place the tragedy within a familiar educational setting: these were children at stages broadly corresponding to primary school. An American elementary school is not a secondary school, and its pupils depend heavily on adults for protection and help during an emergency.

The firearm debate also takes place under a different legal framework from Britain's. American regulation combines federal and state rules, making Oregon's own permit requirements part of the context. The events in Bend bring together two distinct issues: preventing access to weapons and protecting children when an armed attacker reaches a school.
